So, you are wanting to promote your business on Facebook without driving your friends crazy? That’s where Facebook lists come in handy.
First let me say the easiest way to keep your work and personal life separate on Facebook is to set up a separate Facebook business page. It’s very easy to do. Just click the gear link at the top right of your Facebook page and choose “Create a Page” from the drop down link. Sure, post a link to it on your personal page so that your friends can “like” it, but then use it exclusively to post information related to your job.
However, personally, I have one Facebook page. I am my work and some things I want to share with everyone. That’s why I use lists. I basically have two lists, one work and one personal. You will need to visit each friend’s page (by clicking on their name) and then, at the top on their cover photo, click on the “Friends” so it will show the drop down and select “add to another list”. Then select the appropriate list. Once you click “add to another list”, you will see the “new list” link at the very bottom.
Keep in mind that not everyone on your list will see every post you make. Facebook has a special algorithm they use to decide which posts to show which users. If you are following someone and you don’t want to miss any of their posts, be sure to click on that setting link from the first image and choose “All Updates”. You’ll notice “Most Updates” is selected by default. If you want to make sure your friends see everything you post, have them do the same. This is also a great way to get rid of those annoying posts about games your friends are playing on Ffacebook. Simply uncheck that option a little further down.
