Recently I had a client who was looking for a text onclick pdf to pop up like an image rather than the ugly page that usually displays with pdfs. I found this plugin: Easy Fancybox.

It answered my problem and looks nice as well as having several customization options.
I liked the fact that you could choose to either auto-enable it or enable it simply by adding a class. Of course, you can also use it with images, but there are other plugins that work for that. This one I found to work simply and to support a wider range of file types. The documentation is fairly good and it didn’t take me long to figure out how to use it.What I didn’t like, was not being able to adjust the individual size that the pdf’s popped up in. There is one setting in back for all pdf’s, and that is probably okay if you, like most people, have only 8.5 x 11 size standard pdfs. For this purpose, however, it was an unusual size, as you will see in the example below. The size options also seem to only work in % and not in px.

Overall, I would give this plugin 5 stars.
**Extra note: If you need a popup to display upon people visiting your site instead of onclick, try WordPress PopUp. It has a nice number of options and is easy to set up.

Note for mobile devices: add this script in the footer (or text widget in the footer) to stop fancybox from working on mobile devices. I find that it doesn’t work well there.
Note: One of my favorite plugins, WP Supersize, causes a conflict with this plugin, so if you are having problems, try disabling it.
